Meet Boris and Smudge, two beautiful kitties who we are so pleased to welcome back to the Vet2Cat family after their time on the Isle of Wight! Since returning to us, both have needed a little extra support. Boris was looking rather skinny so we’ve carried out further tests and are now putting a plan in place to help his multiple problems, bless him. Smudge was previously diagnosed with hyperthyroidism but struggled with medication. We’ve started her on a simple ear gel instead, and after just one month she’s already brighter and gaining weight; it's so lovely to see. We’re looking forward to continuing to support them both and helping them feel their best in the years ahead! Neutering isn’t just about preventing unwanted litters; it plays a huge role in your cat’s long-term health and safety. Cats that aren’t neutered are often at higher risk of a number of health complications, including: • Fighting injuries - bites and scratches can lead to painful abscesses • Spread of disease - including Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), often passed through bite wounds • Road traffic accidents - roaming cats are more likely to wander further and get injured • Stress and behavioural issues - including spraying, calling, and frustration There are also serious health risks linked to reproductive organs: • Female cats can develop uterine infections (pyometra), which can be life-threatening, as well as mammary tumours • Male cats may be more prone to injuries and infections linked to roaming and fighting Neutering helps reduce these risks, supporting your cat to live a longer, safer, and more comfortable life. It can also help reduce behaviours like roaming, fighting, and spraying, which often improves their overall wellbeing at home too. Neutering is one of the most effective ways we can protect our cats. Some cats; especially those who are long-haired, older, overweight, arthritic, or unwell; can struggle to groom themselves properly, which may lead to mats, a scruffy coat, dandruff, hairballs, or even over-grooming. Just as importantly, grooming should always be done on your cat’s terms. Watching their body language can help you tell when they’re comfortable, and when they’ve had enough. Meet Bug - VCA Tiv’s lovely little tabby. Bug first came to us as a stray… and very quickly made herself impossible to part with, becoming a much-loved permanent member of the family. When Bug was first brought in, she had been examined by our nurse and locum vet, and there was some concern that she may have been in the very early stages of pregnancy - termination was the kindest option at the time as we believed she was very young. At her pre-op assessment, we carefully checked again, and there were no obvious signs of pregnancy. We then performed an ultrasound scan, which also confirmed this. As there were no visible spay scars (we checked both flanks and the midline), and her nipples looked elongated as though they may have been used before, we felt the safest option was to proceed with surgery rather than wait and see if she came into season. Bug then went in for her spay, where we found that her uterus was abnormally thickened and both ovaries looked quite cystic. From the appearance of her uterus, this was most consistent with cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH). What is CEH? CEH is a condition where the lining of the uterus becomes abnormally thickened and cystic, usually due to repeated hormonal changes from going through seasons without being spayed. Over time, this can increase the risk of uterine disease, including infection (pyometra), which can become very serious and even life-threatening if left untreated. Because Bug was spayed when she was, we were able to remove the abnormal uterus and ovaries before this had the chance to progress further. Bug is doing really well, and we’re all so glad she was spayed when she was. She’s a brilliant example of why spaying and neutering is so important. Without getting her in when we did, Bug’s future could have looked very different.
