CAT OF THE MONTH! October 24 Handsome Maine Coon Chilli had a weird thing in his mouth causing him discomfort with eating, and dental disease from not being able to eat properly on one side. We removed it and sent it off to the lab for analysis and cleaned up his teeth. He's doing very well now, can eat normally, and is a lot happier; here he is strutting his stuff around the house. The weird thing - the lab find the tiniest fragment of bone in the centre of it! Not sure where it came from but we suspect it had set up an ongoing foreign body reaction. Cats use a combination of vocalisations, body language, and scent marking to communicate with each other. Let's take a look at the different ways these forms of communication work. 1. Vocalisations -Meowing: Cats rarely meow at each other. Meows are mostly reserved for communicating with humans. -Hissing: A warning sign used when a cat feels threatened. It signals to other cats to back off. -Growling: A deeper, more prolonged warning compared to hissing, often used when the situation is escalating. -Chirping: A friendly sound, often made between a mother cat and her kittens or between bonded cats. It can also signal excitement. -Yowling: A loud, drawn-out vocalization used during mating or territorial disputes. It's a sign of distress, desire, or frustration. 2. Body Language -Tail Position: The tail is a key indicator of a cat's mood. A raised, slightly curled tail often indicates friendliness, while a puffed-up tail signals fear or territorial behaviour. A low or twitching tail shows agitation. -Ears: Forward-pointing ears indicate a relaxed or curious cat, while flattened ears signal fear or pain. -Eye Contact: Cats may communicate through slow blinking, a signal of trust and affection. Staring without blinking, on the other hand, is rather confrontational! -Posture: An arched back with fur standing on end is a defensive posture, while a crouched body shows fear or appeasement. -Pawing or Biting: Gentle pawing or nipping can be playful, but hard swats or biting are repelling behaviours. 3. Scent Marking -Rubbing and Head-Butting: Cats have scent glands that produce pheromones on their faces and bodies. Rubbing against other cats or objects leaves their scent, marking territory or signalling bonding. -Scratching: Not only a visual signal to mark territory, but there are also more scent glands in the paws that leave pheromones in the scratched areas. -Urine Marking: Both male and female cats may spray urine to mark territory, especially in multi-cat households or during mating season. This sends a clear message about sexual status and territory boundaries. -Middening: This means territorial marking with faeces, not all cats feel the need to do this, usually wanting to cover up their poop, but some will feel the need to leave some out in the open. 4. Touching and Grooming -Allo-grooming: Mutual grooming between cats, especially in bonded pairs or groups, is a sign of trust and affection. It strengthens social bonds. Allo-rubbing: Socially bonded cats often rub the full length of their bodies against each other. -Nose Touching: Cats sometimes greet each other by touching noses, a friendly gesture that mimics their natural curiosity. Water proof sprays are used to protect shoes, suede, leather products, camping equipment, and patio furniture from dirt and damp weather conditions. Waterproofing sprays can contain potentially toxic hydrocarbons which pose a dangerous hazard to ourselves and our animal companions. When sprayed indoors or in poorly ventilated area, we, or our pets may inhale the spray. After breathing in the spray, the hydrocarbons in these products can cause chemical pneumonitis resulting in acute lung injury, and an inability to breathe in enough oxygen. Signs of chemical pneumonitis present as respiratory distress which can include: - -Fast breathing -Breathing with greater effort -Wheezing and coughing -Nausea -Vomiting -Lethargy The smaller the size of animal; the higher the risk of lung injury. Signs develop within minutes to hours after exposure. Delays as long as 24 hours have been noted. What should I do if my cat shows signs of this? If your cat shows mild signs, such as a mild cough, removing them from the area of the spray and into fresh air may be all that is required. Cats showing severe respiratory distress signs will need to be seen by a vet as soon as possible for immediate intervention, if left untreated it can lead to death. #KeepYourCatSafe #VetAdvice #mobilevets #vet2cat #CatSafety
