What Happens to My Cat Under Anaesthetic?💤 It’s completely normal to feel nervous about your cat having an anaesthetic — so here’s a simple breakdown of what happens to keep your furry friend safe and comfortable: 1. Pre-anaesthetic check before anything starts; we’ll do a health check (and sometimes blood tests) to make sure your cat is fit for anaesthetic. 2. Sedation & prep; We give your cat a light sedative to help them relax. We then place an catheter into a leg vein, so further drugs and fluids can be administered, all while keeping your cat calm and comfy. 3. Going under; A controlled dose of anaesthetic is given, and your cat is gently put into a state of anaesthesia. They'll be unconscious and won’t feel a thing during the procedure. Any surgical area will then be prepared - eg clipping hair, cleaning the skin with antiseptic, often at the same time as another team member rigs up all the monitoring equipment required. 4. Constant monitoring; Our qualified RVN watches your cat closely the whole time — tracking their heart rate, breathing, temperature, oxygen levels, and more. They’re never left alone. 5. Waking up; Once the procedure’s done, we stop the anaesthetic and let your cat wake up slowly and safely. We keep them warm, monitored, and comfortable until they’re fully awake. Most cats recover quickly and are often just a little sleepy or wobbly for the rest of the day. We’ll send them home with everything you need to keep them happy and healing. Have more questions?
